Functioning in the Body

MCTs are an immediate source of energy in the liver, MCTs are converted into ketones like beta-hydroxybutyrate, which, in the fasting state, provide better, more efficient energy for the brain, increasing focus and concentration. Due to their shorter chain length, MCTs travel more quickly from the gut to the liver and do not require bile to break down like longer-chain fats do. In the liver, the fats are broken down to be either used as fuel or stored as body fat.

Since MCTs easily enter your bloodstream without being broken down, they can be used as an immediate source of energy.

Food sources for MCT Oil

MCTs come from palm kernel oil, coconut oil, and dairy fats. There are several ways that MCT oil can be synthesized, from genetic engineering to chemical synthesis. The most common is chemical synthesis.

Benefits of MCT Oil

    1. MCT oil could be a good energy source

The body absorbs MCTs more rapidly than long-chain triglycerides (LCTs), which contain more carbons in their fatty acid chains. When you’re on a ketogenic diet, MCTs can also be converted into ketones in the liver. These ketones can pass through your blood-brain barrier, making them a source of energy for your brain cells.

    2. MCT could help manage epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, and autism.

MCT oils are particularly good for cooking because they have a high “smoke point,” meaning they don’t oxidize from heat easily. This is important, because certain cooking oils are not well- suited for high-temperature cooking (like extra virgin olive oil or flaxseed oil, for example) and can become rancid oils somewhat easily.

    3. MCT oil can be used for the most part in baked goods, sautés, stir-fries and grilled foods without oxidizing.

    4. They contain anti oxidant properties and have anti-inflammatory benefit that include helping hearth health, obesity prevention and brain health

Precautions

One of the main reasons experts suggest starting with a lower dose of MCTs is their potential side effects, which most commonly occur when you consume too much too quickly.

“The main side effect of taking MCT oil will be loose stools, diarrhea or, at worst, soiling of underwear due to incontinence of stool. These symptoms may be accompanied by gas, bloating or abdominal pain or cramping.
